Adebayor?

I must be missing something about Emmanuel Adebayor. Does he have blackmail photos of Arsene Wenger tucked away into his long socks?

Despite the nice work setting up Henry’s goal to salvage a 1-1 draw with Spurs, his performance today was anything but inspired. He wandered around the field, gave up possession virtually every time he had the ball, and generally played with such a lack of passion that at one point I wondered if he might be sick.

I’m trying to figure out Adebayor (who was signed for a reported 7 million pounds) and his role at Arsenal. As an attacker, he seems to be missing the delicate touch and control needed to be effective. Like Peter Crouch, Adebayor seems to be uncomfortable with his own 6’3″ body. And it certainly doesn’t help to see him walking around the midfield looking tired and exhausted 10 minutes into the game. I mean, if you can’t get up for a Spurs game where a Champions League spot is at stake, what the hell are you doing there? And, in fact, why are you starting ahead in a game of such importance? And why were you left on? Again, I have to think compromising photos…

I know that he is a big reason why Togo are in the World Cup, scoring a whack of goals for the national team (11) in qualification. But right now he just seems to be a level below what I would expect from an Arsenal striker.

He’s unrefined though, isn’t he? Wenger’s made these signings in January before and they’ve not developed into the full Arsenal player until the next season. I think he’s got something, I just don’t think we’re seeing it yet.

Unrefined is a good word. Perhaps he will pan out and I should have more faith in Wenger. After all, he has shown in the past he is a master at developing raw talent.

That’s awful summing him up in one game. No idea how you can compare him to Crouch and you have obviously not seen much of him if this in your opinion. His all round game is very good and he will become a very good premiership player

[...] Finally, a note to Emannuel Adebayor (since I know you are a regular reader of the Fool, mostly for my spot on analysis and in depth knowledge of the finer, tactical points of the game), I’m sorry for all those lousy things I have said about you in the past. My conversion is complete. You worked your butt off on the pitch. And it was a bloody cheeky move to bring the ball back to van der Sar to try to prevent him from running down the clock. [...]
