Canada: 2 Brazil: 1

It’s a scoreline that probably hasn’t been seen in the history of Canadian soccer, but tonight the Canadian U20 team put in a strong performance and beat Brazil 2-1 at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton.

Defender David Edgar (Newcastle, England), midfielder Jaime Peters (Ipswich Town, England) and striker Will Johnson (Heerenveen, the Netherlands) were stellar, with Edgar and Johnson scoring for the Canucks and Peters tearing up the right side and causing all kinds of grief for the Brazilian defenders.

However, what was really impressive was that 14,000 showed up for the U-20 friendly – this in the heartland of Canadian hockey on a night when the Edmonton Oilers kicked off their conference final series against Anaheim. 14,000 tonight should mean an impressive turnout for the FIFA U20 World Cup next summer, which is being hosted by Canada.

The 3 game friendly series continues on Monday in Victoria and wraps up in Vancouver on Thursday, May 25.
