David Edgar (Newcastle) on the FIFA U20 World Cup
The FIFA site has an interview with 19 year old Canadian defender David Edgar (currently hanging with the Geordie’ at Newcastle). As suspected, the smile on his face after scoring against ManU lasted for a few days.
“There is no way to accurately describe how it felt to score that goal, it was just unbelievable. As soon as it left my foot I knew it was going in and I just went mad. It was the greatest feeling in the world. I couldn’t stop smiling and the boss and the players had to calm me down because there were still 15 minutes to go. I can tell you, though, I was smiling for a few days after the game too!”
Edgar is bullish on the Canada’s U20 team doing well this summer at the FIFA U20 World Cup.
“This group of players is really good and recent results against Brazil and the Czech Republic prove that,” he said. “Everyone in the team is really excited to play. It’s getting huge and I hear that a lot of the tickets are already sold in Canada. We need all of the fans to get behind us and I am sure they will be. Normally Canadian teams are not used to having lots of fans behind them, as we play a lot of our games away from home. But this time, with the fans behind us, we are ready to go and hopefully we can show our stuff.”
With Edgar gaining experience in the EPL, and many other U20 players gaining European experience (Jonathon de Guzman (Feyenrood), Zach Kalthoff (Southhampton), Jacob Lensky (Celtic), Kennedy Owwusu-Anash (Hertha Berlin) and Jamie Peters (Ipswich) to name a few), you can’t help but agree with Edgar that Canada looks a lot stronger for the 2007 U20 World Cup than it did for the 2005 version in The Netherlands where Canada exited in the first round.
