ManU vs. Arsenal – Old Skool Radio Coverage

If you are lucky enough to live in the UK and want to experience the Arsenal/ManU match in a totally different way, you can go retro with BBC Radio Five Live’s Back to square one radio broadcast.

The idea (to celebrate 80 years of broadcasting) is that you download a poster with a picture of a field, broken into grids. One commentator calls the game, while the other calls out the grid number.

In the late 1920s and early 1930s, listeners could follow the action with the help of a grid published in the Radio Times. We’re hoping to recreate that experience.

The grid has been updated but the principle remains the same. John Murray will describe the action while James Alexander Gordon calls out the grid numbers as the ball moves from square to square.

Since this is a Sports Extra thing, only listeners in the UK will be able to follow along. But even if you can’t follow the game, you can still download a pdf version of the grid (150kb), which is kind of fun.

Now all we need is some little Henry and C. Ronaldo action figures. You could line up the players on the pitch and move them around as the play unfolded.
