New Zealand qualifies for U-20 World Cup
Fulham midfielder Chris James scored with seconds left in stoppage time to give New Zealand a 1-0 win over New Caledonia in the final game of the OFC qualification tournament for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Despite being favorites in the tournament, the All Whites had to wait until their final game to qualify, fending off a strong run from Fiji, who notched 4 consecutive wins in the OFC tournament.
It is the first time the new Zealand U-20’s have qualified for a World Cup.
New Zealand became the 22nd qualifiers for the 24-team FIFA U-20 World Cup which takes place in Canada between 30 June and 22 July. The final 2 qualifying positions will be decided at the second round of CONCACAF qualifying in Mexico February 21-25.
