De Rosario & Sinclair named 2006 Canadian Players of the Year
Houston Dynamo striker Dwayne De Rosario and Vancouver Whitecaps forward Christine Sinclair have been named Canadian Players of the Year for the 2006 soccer season by the Canadian Soccer Association.
Atiba Hutchinson (FC København (Copenhagen) in Denmark) has been named the inaugural CanadaSoccer.com Fan’s Choice winner. Hutchinson became just the second Canadian player to score in a UEFA Champions League game. The first being Fulham striker Tomasz Radzinski.
De Rosario’s was the MLS All-Star game MVP and won the MLS Cup championship with the Dynamo. This is the second-straight season in which De Rosario has won the award. It is especially nice to see that, for all the professional success De Ro is having, that his main goal is getting Canada to 2010 in South Africa.
“For me, however, the ultimate goal is not necessarily winning awards, but helping Canada get to its first World Cup. I will continue working tirelessly until we make that happen.”
Sinclair, meanwhile, had a banner year. The 23 year old scored 11 goals in her 17 caps, and was team captain at both the Peace Queen Cup and CONCACAF Gold Cup. Sinclair was also short-listed this year for the FIFA World Player of the Year.
Newcastle’s David Edgar (can you have many bigger moments in your young career than scoring against ManU?) and Sinclair’s Whitecap teammate Jodi-Ann Robinson were named Canadian Youth Players of the Year.
