Heartbreak at Anfield
I had mixed feelings about Liverpool/ManU today. I really like Liverpool, so I was hoping they could pull out the victory. On the other hand, being an Arsenal fan and knowing the Reds and Gunners are in a neck and neck battle for Champions League positioning, part of me was hoping for a (gasp) United win. But not one that would break the heart of the crowd at Anfield, with John O’Shea scoring a messy goal deep into in stoppage time.
Straight up, Liverpool deserved to come away with points. They had plenty of quality opportunities, especially in the first half, and had United on their heels for most of the game. Craig Bellamy was especially strong, running over Nemanja Vidic on a number of occasions and creating some great opportunities. Which is why I was confused as to why he was subbed. He seemed to be creating some real opportunities for Liverpool.
The win for United did not come without cost, however. Wayne Rooney limped off the field with a bloody leg after a high challenge from Jamie Carragher, and Paul Scholes is gone for three after getting a red card for tossing a punch at Xavi Alonso. This was also Henrik Larsson’s final Prem appearance before he heads back to Sweden.
Still Liverpool should be bouyed by their performance and looking forward with confidence to their Champions League game against Barcelona next week.
