Adebayor receives death threats
Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor received death threats prior to Togo’s African Cup of Nations qualifier match against Sierra Leone on Saturday.
Adebayor, who scored twice to lead Togo to a 3-1 victory, said that he is considering his future with regards to playing for Togo.
“I am going back to Arsenal in London to reflect and think about my future. I have to protect my life. I have a family to look after.”
Word this morning is that Togo has made the decision for him, axing Adebayor and 2 other players from the national team.
At the heart of all of this is bonuses that were to be paid to the players for reaching the World Cup in Germany. Adebayor has stated that the players have not yet received their bonuses – roughly US$55,000.
It’s hard to defend any Prem player when a dispute concerns money, but in this case, I am in support of Adebayor. While he is a multimillionaire, many of his teammates are not. I think Adebayor, who is easily the most recognizable sports star in the African nation, is showing real leadership in standing up for his fellow teammates.
This agreement was negotiated fairly and before the tournament began. It is fair for Adebayor and his teammates to expect that the other party live up to their commitments.
