Fabergas, Ronaldo, Drogba compete for Player of the Year
Cesc Fabergas (Arsenal), Didier Drogba (Chelsea), Cristiano Ronaldo (ManU), Paul Scholes (ManU), Ryan Giggs (ManU), and Wayne Rooney (ManU) have made the shortlist for the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year.
The choice, to me, comes down to 2 players: Drogba and Ronaldo (sorry Cesc).
Cristiano Ronaldo is arguably the most exciting footballer in England at the moment. Capable of turning a game at any point, you have to think this is the year for Ronaldo, who may also end up as the European Footballer of the Year. Heck, even Drogba’s teammate John Terry thinks he is the best.
“I could watch United just to watch him. He does things no-one else in the world is doing at the minute,” he said.
“He’s the best in the world. At his best, not many people can stop him.”
But you can’t discount the contribution that Didier Drogba has made to Chelsea. Drogba has 30 goals and could become the very first African player to win the award.
Both players stir strong emotions in people. But love them or hate them, there is no denying their talent.
As for the other 4 candidates. Rooney’s season has seemed lackluster and inconsistent, Fabergas, while being a fantastic player, might be harmed by Arsenal’s poor showing in the standings and his own lack of goals. Giggs and Scholes seem like sentimental picks to me. Remove Ronaldo from the ManU lineup and you notice the hole. The same can’t be said of Giggs and Scholes.
The awards will be presented Sunday night in London.
