Owen Hargreaves completes move and gives me a good reason to dislike ManU
Owen Hargreaves is set to complete his move from Bayern to ManU in a few days, which gives me another reason to dislike ManU.
A few years ago Hargreaves was in the position where he could have, because of his citizenship status, played international soccer for a number of countries, including the country here he played the majority of his youth soccer in: Canada. Instead, he opted for England and I’ve been bitter about it since.
I know. I hear what you are saying. Given a choice of countries to play for, who wouldn’t play internationally for England rather than Canada? At least with England, you have a shot at playing in the World Cup, Euro and at other toruny’s against the best in the world. So, in that respect you can hardly blame him. Yet I still do.
Last week, I heard a reporter on the CBC talk about Hargreaves as an impact player, someone who can change the course of a game. He certainly showed that at the WC last summer where he was arguably the most consistent player in the English side. Hargreaves is the type of player who could come in a lineup like Canada and make a real difference in regional qualifying for something like the World Cup. Far be it to say that one player makes a team, but with a guy of Hargreaves talent in the lineup, qualifying from CONCACAF for the WC would sure be a heck of a lot easier.
And how great would it be for some of the younger players on the squad to play alongside a guy like him? Talk about a youth training program, playing alongside one of the best controlling midfielders in the game?
Well, it ain’t happening. Hargreaves is playing for England and I am bitter. And the only way to exorcise my bitter demons is to transfer my disappointment about Hargreaves international status onto his new club side, ManU.
Not a problem at all.
