An interview with interim Canada Coach Stephen Hart

“We’re looking at the first game (Costa Rica) as sort of a measuring stick and a very important game. We’ll get to see the other teams play before we play them. We’re really focusing on the first game. Costa Rica has done extremely well at the international level. We basically know what they are about and what to expect so it’s going to be a tough game.”
Interim Canada Head Coach Stephen Hart

In a few hours, Canada will kick off the Gold Cup against one of the strongest teams in the confederation: Costa Rica (the game is broadcast on Sportsnet at 6pm Pacific, following the TFC/Red Bulls game, but check their listings to confirm that as I find they are sometimes unreliable and change at the last minute).

Just ahead of the tournament, the BCSA Province of Soccer blog has an interview with interim Canada Head Coach Stephen Hart. According to Hart, one of the areas the team has been working on in training is keeping possession, and area that was sorely lacking in the game against Venezuela last week.

Additionally, Hart says that he hopes to make the quarterfinals. Sportsnet’s Gerry Dobson apparently went one further. In an interview this morning with a Toronto radio station, Dobson said the semi’s are do-able for this squad.

Whatever the result, the next week will be the best indication that Canadian footie fans have as to how legitimate our chances are of qualifying for 2010.

Am I ever glad you posted. Just got home from work and I didn’t know about either game tonight (busy week!) Am now comfortably on the couch at the 30 minute mark of the TFC game.

Just noticed Bruce Arena is Red Bull coach. What’s your thoughts on Mr. Arena — I’ve never much liked him but I admit I’ve only seen him on world cup telecasts.

Re: Gold Cup. Top 4 is going to be a tough nut but here’s hoping…

I haven’t followed Arena’s career much. I know that fans in the U.S. have a real love/hate relationship with him. I think last summers WC was a major disappointment for U.S. soccer fans who had high hopes of doing really well and then falling so flat.

After watching the Costa Rica game on Wednesday, a top 4 finish for Canada in the G.C seems not so far away as it did on Tuesday.
