Savouring the victory: Canada stuns Costa Rica 2-1 in Gold Cup opener
2 goals by Julian De Guzman led Canada to a massive 2-1 victory against Costa Rica to open the 2007 Gold Cup in Florida.
It was a great game for Canada. All the big guns for Canada came to play, with fantastic performances by De Guzman, Atiba Hutchinson, Dwayne DeRosario and Rob Friend. Canada controlled the game and did a much better job of maintaining possession in the midfield and our defense, anchored by Paul Staltari was much more consistent than against Venezuela a few days ago.
The biggest disappointment of the night was with Sportsnet. I knew ahead of time that the game was going to be tape delayed, but imagine my horror when I turn on Sportsent a few moments before the game and see the game not only in progress, but in the 93rd minute with the final score in front of me. Unbelievable! A few minutes later, the game ends and Sportsnet begins their tape delay of the game. So I get to watch the full game knowing the final score. What a mess. Talk about sucking any sense of excitement out of the game.
Oh, and I can’t wait for Gerry Dobson and Craig Forrest to get down to Florida to call the rest of Canada’s games. I don’t know who the idiots were who were calling the game, but it was painful.

I had a good chuckle about the announcers. That sportsnet “colour” guy was so deadpan he was funny. I wish I taped it.
