Barclays English Premier League on TV in Canada
With Sportsnet dropping their Saturday morning EPL games this season (oh, how I’ll miss the Saturday triple header), it was looking like EPL fans were going to be outta luck for live EPL coverage this season. However, The Score has announced that they will pick up where they left off 2 years ago and be carrying Sunday EPL games this season (see below for full schedule). In addition, Score Media has also secured the exclusive Canadian online and mobile highlight rights to every Premier League game for the next three seasons, so we will at least get some decent highlight packages on The Score.
Still, if you are looking for live EPL coverage for the 2007-08 season in Canada, pickings are pretty slim. Shaw cable in Victoria has said that they will not be adding a Setanta channel to their cable or digital lineup. As far as I know, GolTV and FSWC don’t have any EPL rights for this season. And I tried ArsenalTV last season and it sucked big time.
Which leaves satellite or ITVN. I’m not splurging for satellite so I am going to give ITVN a try. It looks promising. They carry all the EPL games this season as well as UEFA Champions League, EURO 2008 Qualifiers, UEFA Cup, Scottish Premier League, French Ligue 1, Dutch Eredivisie and some more for $14.95 a month. It’s a bit different as the signal is carried thru your internet connection so broadband is a must. You also need a special receiver, provided by ITVN (and it’s free if you sign up for a year). A few years ago lacrosse games were carried via ITVN and, from all the reviews I’ve read, it seemed like it worked well. So, I’m ordering my ITVN package and we’ll see how it goes.
(If you decide to give ITVN a try and order it via this link they send me some love).
UPDATE July 24, 2007: I’m removing all links to ITVN from the site and have decided to skip on giving the service a try. ITVN has been purchased by a Canadian company called Broadshift, who I cannot find much information about. But there is some information that isn’t very comforting being posted in various soccer related forums about this company, so for the time being I am pulling all my ITVN related adverts and affiliate links. Setanta Broadband looks like be a better option, although I can’t find a definitive EPL broadcast schedule on their site anywhere.
Crap, all I want to do is watch friggin soccer, not find a cure for cancer. Why is this so damn difficult!

After seeing the viewership numbers for the EPL on Sportsnet last season it can’t be a huge surprise that they didn’t go after the rights a bit harder. The numbers were pitiful.
That said, honestly this is the worst news I have gotten this year. I generally could care less about the Sunday games, if the game was good fine, but the Saturday 3 pack was my Saturday, not just a part of it. I feel awful about this news.
I guess a thanks for the update is in order, but what horrible news.
As an aside, I just watched the Liverpool vs. Hong Kong match yesterday on the Score and if that is the level of coverage we can expect from that station I may not even watch the Sunday games. The coverage broke three times in the first half to update the score in the San Diego / Colorado MLB game. I love baseball, but isn’t the ticker enough of an update for a meaningless west coast game? Tehy never interupt wrestling for updates, so why do it to Liverpool? Easy answer, to screw me.
After charging $30 for the FA cup on PPV, this is the worst thing Canada has done to me in the world of soccer coverage.
