Ljungberg to West Ham

Just days after he ruled out a move to another Prem side, Freddie Ljungberg has gone to West Ham for £3m. His parting words seem like a real shot at Arsenal.

“Two years ago when I signed my last contract we talked a lot about the future and about bringing great players to the club,” Ljungberg explained.

“Despite building the new stadium we wanted to stay top in England and do well in Europe. For me that didn’t really happen.”

Really, Freddie, you see a brighter future for West Ham than Arsenal?

This move doesn’t make sense to me. On one hand, Ljungberg talks about how disappointed he is that Arsenal didn’t do that well last season and that he doesn’t see a lot of change in the Arsenal squad. He obviously feels like Arsenal is a sinking ship so he’s jumping. But then he goes to West Ham?

Does he really think he’s going to get top flight action playing for West Ham? Arsenal will once again be playing against the best in Europe this season. Where’s West Ham? Not in the Champions League. And they still have the whole Tevez debacle hanging over them.

I’m getting a tad tired of reading stories about Arsenal doing diddly squat in the summer transfer orgy and how this must be a sign that the apocalypse is nigh for the Gunners. Last season everyone and their dog was saying how great this team was going to be in the future. How full of potential these young players are.

Well, the future is one year closer and why would Wenger tinker now? He showed a lot of faith in his young crew last year and he is obviously happy with how things are coming together for Arsenal. After all, here is a team that managed to qualify for the Champions League for yet another year on the backs of a bunch of kids. And they did it minus many key players for most of the season due to injury, including Henry, RVP and even Ljungberg, who one could argue has been completely ineffective for the past 2 seasons, due to injury.

So long, Freddie. Your parting words are duly noted. Let’s see at the end of the season who has turned their potential into results.
