Canada announces lineup for Friendly against South Africa

Canada will be playing 2010 World Cup host South Africa in an international Friendly next week (November 20th) in Durban, South Africa. Today Dale Mitchell announced his squad and it looks like he is pulling heavily from Europe and will contain a previously uncapped player.

As expected, DeRo and Pat Onstaad will be sitting this one out as Houston heads into the MLS Finals against New England this weekend. Rob Friend is also out, lighting up the German second division for his club Borussia M’gladbach. He currently sits second in the division scoring race with 9 goals.

In for the first time is Marcel De Jong, a 21-year-old who plays for Roda JC in the Netherlands.

Still no word on Jonathon DeGuzman’s status for Canada, but tons of speculation that Chelsea are hoping to bring the 20 year old into the fold in January. If that is true, it may be a good thing for Canada as the younger DeGuzman may then decide to leave his Dutch allegiance behind. But who knows what is going thru his head.

Apparently, Sportsnet will be carrying the Friendly, but I can’t find reference on Sportsnet’s website. Scratch that. It looks like it is going to be on the entire Sportsnet channel lineup and scheduled for 9:30am PST, Tuesday, Nov 20th, with a repeat at Midnight PST. Good on ya, Sportsnet!
