Stalteri to Pompey?

Paul Stalteri as we know and love himA report in the Daily Mail has linked Canadian defender Paul Stalteri (currently out of favour at Spurs with new boss Juande Ramos) to Portsmouth. The deal would see Stalteri go to Pompey on loan from Tottenham.

Whatever happens, two things seem clear to me. One is that Stalteri is on the move. There has been a lot of smoke around him, and his playing time with Spurs has been greatly diminished. The second is that, wherever he ends up, he needs to be able to play in order to keep his game up to an international level. The Paul Stalteri we saw playing in South Africa is not the Paul Stalteri many Canuck soccer fans know. His time riding the pine at Spurs has hurt his game. Whether he will get that time at Portsmouth is a matter of speculation for Pompey fans, who are wondering where he fits into the puzzle.

As much as he can drive me crazy with his hot antics on the field, Stalteri is an integral part of the current Canuck lineup and wherever he ends up, I’m hoping, for the sake of the national team, that he ends up on the field and not on the bench.

There’s another rumour about Stalteri going back to Germany to play with Wolfsburg.

If his time in Bremen was any indication, the Germans love Stalteri more than they do David Hasselhof. Wolfsburg would be a better move for him than Pompey. I imagine he would get a bit more playing time there than in Portsmouth.
