The journey to 2010 begins now
No disrespect to St. Vincent & Grenadines, but the journey for Canada to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa begins Wednesday night against Jamaica.
I’m feeling nervous, in a good, excited way. Which is different than I’ve felt heading into important games in the past. I can’t wait for Wednesday, and I know I am not alone with The Voyageurs and various Toronto FC groups organizing the masses and making sure that Canada will be extremely well supported Wednesday night.
Over at Sportsnet, Gerry Dobson is reporting that Issey Nakajima-Farran picked up a knock over the weekend playing for his club FC Nordsjaelland and won’t be taking part. A blow, but not a major one.
Gerry also has some kind words for the CSA, and I have to admit that I have noticed that major CSA screw-ups have become less and less frequent in the past year. It feels as if something has changed. Maybe they read the V’s boards and are starting to listen to the fans (although I am still not sure whether this store is the “official” CSA merchandise store. There are no links to it from the CSA site and the CSA hasn’t returned my email). At any rate, it has been nice talking about the game as opposed to the mismanagement of it.
If you are going to be taking part in Toronto Wednesday night, I’ll make the same pitch to you as I did to the rest of the V’s – be the media. Be a citizen journalist and document as much as possible.
Bring your digital cameras, camcorders, phones, digital media devices and take tons of photos. Shoot video. And then post it to sites like YouTube and Flickr. Let’s use these open social media tools to tell the story of our WC campaign – and begin the grassroots campaign of soccer domination to the masses.
For those of you familiar with tagging, tag your content with the keyword wc2010canada. I am sure there are web developers who can begin mashing up multimedia content and start virally spreading the story of Canada’s march to 2010.
There is no one in a better position to tell the story of the 2010 campaign than us. If you are going to be in Toronto on Wednesday, Montreal on September 6th, or Edmonton on October 15th, tell your story and, bit by bit, let’s document this journey.
So, who are you going to cheer for?
