Is this going to be the week for Vancouver?

Team 1040 is reporting that MLS officials will be in Vancouver this week to announce that the Vancouver Whitecaps will be joining the MLS in 2011.

The team is in Tanzania this week playing some friendlies in Africa. (which, as an aside, makes me go wtf – a USL team can manage Friendlies against world class competition in Africa and the Canadian MNT can’t? But I digress). Whitecaps brass, including Bob Lenarduzzi, have stayed behind, possibly expecting this type of announcement might happen.

Add in the Seattle Sounders MLS expansion this year and an expected announcement of Portland as another 2011 MLS franchise possibly coming in the next few weeks and we have got the beginnings of a great Cascadia division and the makings of some wonderful regional rivalries emerging here.

Could be an exciting week.

I'm really looking forward to the roadtrips down to Seattle and Portland… fingers crossed.
