At this moment, DeRo's presence in the game extends far beyond
Toronto. He is THE face of the game in Canada. A marque star. To have
that marque player sit out a major international tournament sends a
pretty big message about the importance (or lack thereof) of the
national program and the Gold Cup.

Fair point about the MLS not being able to shut down for a month while
the tournament goes on. It would be better for CONCACAF, FIFA and MLS
to sit down and come up with a window that would work for the tourny.
Hell, with the geography of our region, we could have the thing in the
middle of winter in some Caribbean country. Or, since CONCACAF insists
on hosting in the US, the southern US.

Point being, the way it is structured right now sets up an
antagonistic relationship between club and country. While a bit of
that will always exist no matter what the situation, the current
structure exasperates an already touchy situation.

I'm glad Harmse is the only current player leaving.
If Canada goes far in the tourney we'd be missing 5 players for a month. That is unacceptable.
It has little to do with MLS -- MLS can't shut down for a fricken month in the middle of the season. Even if they wanted to shut down for FIFA dates, they'd have to shut down for the equivalent of 6 weeks over the course of the year.
De Ro's served his country well in the past and now it's his time to be selfish and play for his club.
