This is a beauty find by J at OOT…or could this be one of the most clever April Fool’s jokes even created by a Canadian soccer fan? Sadly, it doesn’t appear to be a joke.

The photo op of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and ENGLAND midfielder Owen Hargreaves was taken in London, where Harper is appearing at the G20 summit.

To add insult to injury of the photo, they are both holding onto a soccer ball emblazened with a red maple leaf. Er, shouldn’t there be 3 lions on that ball? Or a St. George’s cross?

In the press release for the photo op, Harper is quoted as saying:

Thank you, Owen, for all you have done to shine the international spotlight on Canadian soccer.

Yes, thank you Owen. For all you have done for the game in Canada, You have given us the one thing that we were missing to galvanize our little community of MNT supporters into a cohesive unit – a common enemy.

Julian de Guzman to Spurs?

Rumour out of England this morning is that ‘arry Redknap is hot for Julian de Guzman. De Guzman’s contract with Deportivo is over at the end of season and, considering the problems he has had with Deportivo and his contract recently, and the financial mess that Deportivo is in, you can expect that there is more than a grain of truth behind his Deportivo departure.

Spurs are in trouble and need some help. Redknapp recently snagged Jermain Defoe from his old Pompey team so Redknapp is making all the right moves to shore up the team. If JDG’s rumoured move to Spurs turns out to be true, then this is one Arsenal fan who is going to be in a reaaaaaal dilema.

David Edgar puts pressure on Newcastle

David Edgar is an eager young man. Reports from Newcastle have the 21 year old Canadian defender pushing hard to either see more first team action with the Magpies or a deal to get him to a team where he can.

It has to be exceptionally frustrating for a guy like David, who has Geordie blood running through him via his Dad, Eddie Edgar, himself a former keeper for Newcastle. A dream come true to play at Newcastle is turning into an extended stay in purgatory as he has seen limited action, despite being the captain of the reserve squad and scoring memorable goals against both ManU (was that really 2 years ago already) and, last week, Liverpool.

Here’s hoping Newcastle pisses or gets off the pot.

Edgar stays put in Newcastle

It looks like the rumblings about David Edgar going out on loan from Newcastle to Burnley/Ipswich have not come to fruition. The loan deadline came and went last night with no move for the 21 year old Edgar. With 5 appearances for the Magpies, it looks like Edgar will be stuck playing mostly reserve team footie for awhile longer.

November 27, 2008 update: I am on crack. As noted by Keepie-Uppie in the comments section, I am mixing Championship sides Burnley’s and Barnsley’s.

Maybe it is because another Burnley Canuck Iain Hume has been in the news so much lately that interest in both Burnley and Canadian soccer players is fueling rumors and speculation. (Silly rabbit – Hume plays for Barnsley). Then again, maybe there is some truth to the rumor that Newcastle defender David Edgar might be off to Burnley. Loan deadline is tomorrow so we should soon know if this rumor has legs.
